The Australian Register of Counsellors and Psychotherapists is a company established by the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia and the Australian Counselling Association as an independent, national register of qualified counsellors and psychotherapists.
All practitioners listed on the ARCAP Register have completed professional qualifications in counselling or psychotherapy, meet ongoing professional development requirements and have clinical supervision of their practice to ensure they provide a quality service to clients and abide by the ethical guidelines of the profession.
DIVISION A on the ARCAP REGISTER
PACFA Counsellors, Psychotherapists and Mental Health Practitioners

CLINICAL REGISTRANTS
Clinical Registrants have completed an AQF (7-9) approved qualification of 400 hours of person-to-person counselling and/or psychotherapy training incorporating a minimum of 200 hours of direct instruction and a formal client contact placement which includes 40 hours of client contact with 10 hours of related clinical supervision within the training program. In addition, Clinical Registrants must have completed 750 hours of client contact since qualifying, with 75 hours of related clinical supervision within a minimum of 2 years.
They undertake a minimum of 20 hours of Continuing Professional Development and 10 hours of Clinical Supervision per year.
PROVISIONAL REGISTRANTS
Provisional Registrants have completed an AQF (7-9) approved qualification of 400 hours of person-to-person counselling and/or psychotherapy training incorporating a minimum of 200 hours of direct instruction and a formal client contact placement which includes 40 hours of client contact with 10 hours of related clinical supervision within the training program.
They undertake a minimum of 20 hours of Continuing Professional Development and 10 hours of Clinical Supervision per year.
MENTAL HEALTH PRACTITIONER
Mental Health Practitioners are Clinical Registrants who demonstrate they meet PACFA’s Mental Health Competencies, including additional knowledge and experience of current assessment techniques and interventions in mental health, and an understanding of research and evaluation methods in mental health.
They undertake a minimum of 20 hours of Continuing Professional Development and 10 hours of Clinical Supervision per year, with a focus on mental health practice.
DIVISION B on the ARCAP REGISTER
ACA Counsellors and Psychotherapists

Level 1
A registered counsellor who has graduated from an ACA accredited (AQF) course of study in Counselling.
- A minimum qualification in counselling at AQF Level 5, 6 or 8; or
- A non–ACA approved AQF Level 7 Bachelor of Counselling degree.
Additionally, the registered counsellor must complete 25 points of ACA approved Ongoing Professional Development per annum and completed 10 hours of professional supervision per membership year.
Level 2
A registered counsellor who has graduated from an ACA accredited course of study in Counselling at the following AQF levels.
- Diploma of Counselling (AQF Level 5), or
- Advanced Diploma of Counselling (AQF Level 6), or
- Associate degree in Counselling (AQF Level 6), and has completed
a. post–qualification minimum of 50 hours of Supervision, and
b. two years of post–qualification supervised practice.
Or completed an ACA accredited:
- Graduate Diploma (AQF level 8) in Counselling and has completed one year’s post–qualification supervised practice.
Or has completed,
- an ACA approved Bachelor (AQF level 7) or Master (AQF level 9) degree in Counselling or,
- has completed a non–ACA approved Bachelor (AQF level 7) in Counselling or Masters of Counselling (AQF level 9) and has been a level 1 member for no less than 12 months and has accumulated 50 or more hours of supervision.
Additionally, a registered counsellor must complete 25 points of ACA approved Ongoing Professional Development per annum and completed a minimum of 10 hours of professional supervision per annum.
Level 3
A registered counsellor who has:
- Graduated from an ACA accredited/approved Bachelor of Counselling (AQF Level 7) or Masters of Counselling (AQF level 9) plus;
a. Completed a minimum of two years post qualification supervised counselling practice plus;
i. a minimum of 750 x supervised client contact hours; and
ii. completed a minimum of 75 hours of professional supervision.
Additionally, a registered counsellor must complete a minimum of 25 points of ACA approved Ongoing Professional Development per annum and a minimum of 10 hours of professional supervision.
Level 4
The registered counsellor has:
- Graduated from an ACA accredited/approved Bachelor of Counselling (AQF Level 7) or Masters of Counselling (AQF level 9), and;
a. Completed a minimum four years post qualification supervised counselling practice plus;
i. complete a minimum of 1000 x supervised client contact hours plus; and
ii. complete a minimum of 100 hours of professional supervision.
Additionally, a registered counsellor must complete a minimum of 25 points of ACA approved Ongoing Professional Development per annum and 10 hours of professional supervision.
