The Australian Register of Counsellors and Psychotherapists is a company established by the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia and the Australian Counselling Association as an independent, national register of qualified counsellors and psychotherapists.

All practitioners listed on the ARCAP Register have completed professional qualifications in counselling or psychotherapy, meet ongoing professional development requirements and have clinical supervision of their practice to ensure they provide a quality service to clients and abide by the ethical guidelines of the profession.

Division A on the ARCAP Register

PACFA Counsellors, Psychotherapists and Mental Health Practitioners


Provisional Registrants

(i) Undergraduate degree or equivalent


3 years training in psychotherapy or counselling: undergraduate degree or equivalent comprising a total of 350 hours of counselling or psychotherapy training. The training includes 50 hours of supervision linked to 200 hours of client contact hours.


(ii) Postgraduate degree or equivalent


Relevant undergraduate degree, as defined by the Registrant’s Member Association, plus specialist training in psychotherapy or counselling: postgraduate degree or equivalent over a minimum of 2 years comprising a total of 200 hours of counselling or psychotherapy training. The training includes 50 hours of supervision linked to 200 hours of client contact hours.


These standards are at least Bachelor degree in terms of level and depth of training, as defined by the Australian Qualification Framework www.aqf.edu.au, or an equivalent training that meets PACFA’s Professional Training Standards.


Clinical Registrants


(i) Undergraduate degree or equivalent


3 years training in psychotherapy or counselling: undergraduate degree or equivalent comprising a total of 350 hours of counselling or psychotherapy training. The training includes 50 hours of clinical supervision linked to 200 hours of client contact hours.


Clinical Registrants have completed a further 750 hours of client contact hours linked to 75 hours of clinical supervision over a minimum period of two years.


Ongoing Professional Development requirements apply to both Provisional and Clinical Registrants.


Mental Health Practitioners


Mental Health Practitioners are Clinical Registrants who demonstrate that they have additional knowledge and experience of current assessment techniques and interventions in mental health, and understanding of research and evaluation methods in mental health.


They must complete additional professional development requirements and attend supervision with an accredited Mental Health Practitioner.

Division B on the ARCAP Register

ACA Counsellors and Psychotherapists


Level 1


Has graduated from an ACA accredited course of study at minimum Diploma Level.
Completes 25 Points of ACA approved Ongoing Professional Development per annum.
Completes 10 hours Professional Supervision per annum.
Qualified to provided client support.


Level 2


Has graduated from an ACA accredited course of study at minimum Diploma Level and has a minimum of 2 years post-Diploma professional experience;
or 1 year post-Diploma plus Vocational Graduate professional experience;
and has completed a minimum of 50 hours Professional Supervision.
OR
Has graduated from an ACA accredited course of study at minimum degree Level;
and completes 10 hours professional supervision per annum.
Completes 25 Points of ACA approved ongoing Professional Development per annum.


Level 3


Has graduated from an ACA accredited course of study at minimum degree level.
Has a minimum 3 years post qualification counselling experience, including minimum 750 client contact hours.
Has completed a minimum of 75 hours professional supervision and completes 10 hours professional supervision per annum.
Completes 25 points of ACA approved ongoing Professional Development per annum.


Level 4


Has graduated from an ACA accredited course of study at minimum degree level.
Has a minimum of 6 years post qualification counselling experience, including minimum 1,000 client contact hours.
Has completed a minimum of 100 hours professional supervision and completes 10 hours professional supervision per annum.
Completes 25 Points of ACA approved ongoing Professional Development per annum.
